Vegetarian Weight Loss
There are many myths about vegetarian weight loss. So to dispel all the myths here are some facts about losing weight on a vegetarian diet.
Nutrition Reviews have carried out a study that compiles data from 87 previous studies. The study shows that a vegetarian diet is highly effective for weight loss. Vegetarian populations are on average slimmer than meat-eaters and experience lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other life-threatening conditions linked with obesity.
The review shows that the weight loss does not depend on exercise or calorie-counting. The rate of this weight loss in vegetarians is approximately one pound per week.
The Authors of the studySusan E. Berkow, Ph.D., C.N.S., and Neal D. Barnard, M.D., of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) say:
"Rates of obesity in the general population are skyrocketing, while in vegetarians, obesity prevalence ranges from 0 percent to 6 percent"
The authors found that the body weight of both male and female vegetarians is, on average, 3 percent to 20 percent lower than that of meat-eaters. Vegetarian and vegan diets have also been put to the test in clinical studies, as the review notes. The best of these clinical studies isolated the effects of diet by keeping exercise constant. The researchers found that a low-fat vegan diet leads to weight loss of about 1 pound per week, even without additional exercise or limits on portion sizes, calories, or carbohydrates.
So it seems pretty conclusive - Being a vegetarian helps you lose weight. Which is great news for us vegetarians. The only question that remains is - What is a healthy vegetarian diet?
There are many ideas and opinions about what constitutes a vegetarian diet, look around on the net and you will find many perspectives. Personally I think its best to use a diet that has been outlined by a medical professional or nutritional expert.
Luckily nowadays there are many well written diets and recipes out there, I use aVeggie Meal Plan because its a diet plan and a recipe book rolled into one (i'm lazy) so I just need to cook the meals rather than worrying about what vitamins and minerals I need, what foods they I can find them in, and then how to make a meal out of those foods.
Once you have a diet in place and you are used to cooking vegetarian meals you don't even think about it. Before I was a vegetarian I thought it would bedifficult to make a meal without meat every night, but really its a piece of cake! (not literally)
I hope you have found my article informative, and if you have any questions about vegetarian weight loss or just being a veggie in general don't hesitate to contact me, I'm no expert but I have been a vegetarian for some years now so I may be able to help.
