Understanding How Much You Should Weigh And What To Do If You're Overweight

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has developed a chart that tells you how much you should weigh depending upon your height

. Although it shouldn't be taken as an exact measurement of your weight, as there are various other aspects to consider (your age and sex being two prime examples), it does a give a good indication of the weight range that you should be aiming for for your height.

Looking at the chart, if you're 5'1", you should weigh between 7 stone 7 pounds and 9 stone 2 pounds. Moving up to 5.8" and your range increases to between 9 stone 7 pounds and 11 stone 6 pounds, whilst if you're 6'1" tall, you should be weighing between 10 stone 10 pounds and 13 stone 4 pounds.

But what happens if you're not in the weight range that the FSA states?

Firstly, it's important not to panic and go on a crash diet, as you're likely to do yourself a lot more harm than good.

Secondly, you need to take into consideration the most common affecting factor - sex - as women generally weigh less than men. Therefore, if you're a woman who is 5'8" tall and weigh a few pounds less than 9 stone 7 pounds, you shouldn't be worried.

However, if you weigh considerably more than what the FSA recommends, then it's worthwhile looking at a diet and fitness programme to lower your weight and get it down to a point within the recommended range.

To start this, you should begin by looking at your current diet. Unless you've been watching what you're eating, it's highly likely that you'll be eating something or have some dietary habit that can be amended to help you lose weight.

Eating late at night, for example, is a common problem and you should aim to not eat anything after 10pm, so to give your body chance to be able to digest it properly.

Foods that are high in natural fats and sugars are also problematic. Nuts, for instance, although great for other parts of your body, are not fantastic when looking to lose weight and the same can be said for most types of fruit juices, as - surprisingly - fruits become more unhealthy (in terms of for losing weight) when made into a juice, rather than when eaten normally.

Once you've taken steps to start eating healthier, it's time look at your exercise routine - if you've got one.

It's not a major problem if you haven't, as there are millions of people in the UK who don't, such as city workers who live in the capital and are only minutes from a London gym, but who can't seem to find the time to go.

The most important thing, however, is that you're actually willing to start exercising. It doesn't have to be anything too strenuous to begin with - daily walks for 30 minutes will suffice or an hour's swimming three times a week is great - as long as you're prepared to take the steps to start exercising regularly.
