When buying from a private seller, horse dealers or importers, any information given should be verified and a purchase contract should be included.

Make sure that when you buy a horse, you should still have enough money to buy for its basic needs: a big enough place to live in, food, decent equipment, regular vet and ferrier visits, and emergency medical supplies to name a few.

You might want to consider one's riding expertise when buying a horse. Buying a more mature horse for beginners is recommended, as mature horses tend to be more patient and relaxed. The notion of growing up with a horse maybe romantic but a less mature horse and a beginner rider is a dangerous mix. Mature horses maybe a bit more on the expensive side, but they are less taxing on your time and finances.

Ask a lot of questions like the horse's health (vaccinations or vet records), temperament, routine care, and even competition records. You deserve to know these things as you will be investing your time and finances when you buy a horse. Don't be afraid to also ask for a trial period for a horse as some sellers may try to sell a sick horse by using drugs to make them look more relaxed, calm, and healthy. The trial period usually lasts for two weeks.

But above everything, you must make sure that you really want one. Buying and owning a horse requires a lot of planning and commitment. One should never buy a horse just because you want one. Visit riding schools and dealers to see exactly what kind of care and commitment is required in owning a horse.

Don't worry about taking time in buying a horse. As with everything that you plan on taking good care of, one should never be afraid to invest time in making sure that you get the best.
