In wedding attires, the bridal gown is usually the highlight of the event. Unlike the groom's wedding attire, thebridal gown, or wedding dress, is mostly worn in because of its traditional aspects, such as why is it that wedding gowns are white. Wearing whitebridal gown or wedding dress is one of the many cultural impact of western traditions. The wearing of white wedding dresses were mainly influenced by the term white wedding. The term refers to the white color of the wedding dress, which became popular in the Victorian era, after Queen Victoria wore a white lace dress at her wedding.
Different theories have been conducted as to why wear a white wedding orbridal dress. One theory is the appreciation of color symbolism. White usually represent purity of heart and the innocence of childhood. One theory is an effort by the monarch to promote lace sales as well as conspicuous consumption by status-conscious families, because a white dress could be easily damaged and was therefore common only among wealthy families. Later, it was believed that the color white symbolized virginity and should be worn only by a virgin bride.
However, the wearing of white gown strongly suggest a symbolic meaning in Christianity. The are a variation of the white surplice worn in the Western Catholic tradition by members of the clergy, church choirs and servers and the gowns worn by girls making their first communion and at their confirmation and also by women making religious vows. Today, the white dress is normally understood merely as the most traditional and popular choice for weddings.
Asian Traditional Wedding Dresses Aside from the western-inspired white wedding dress, red has also been a very popular color in wedding dresses. Many wedding dresses in China, India (wedding sari) and Vietnam (in the traditional form of the Ao dai) are colored red, the traditional color of good luck and auspiciousness. However, today's current trends have led many women opt not to wear red and choose other colors, such as the color white. Chinese weddings, the bride usually opts for the white Western dress or changes from a white gown to a red gown later in the day and sometimes a gold-colored gown later on. In the Philippines, the Baro't saya is the traditional wedding dress used by Filipinas or Filipino women. But with the westernized culture, the use of Baro't saya have long been diminished, although several provinces in the Philippines still use the Baro't saya as wedding gowns.
