, and it's a sound idea to have a plan about how you'll tackle each stage before you even begin. A wedding seating chart is often one of those aspects of planning and preparing for a wedding that people tend to underestimate, assuming it will take no more than an afternoon to sort out. The first stage to creating a wedding seating plan is to work out where everybody is going to sit. To do this you need to visit the venue, take rough measurements of the room, check out what tables they have, including the size, shape and number, and make a note of key things such as doors and toilet locations. Once you've done this you need to sketch out a plan of the room, draw each of the tables and chairs, and start placing guests in each spot.
Of course, you may run out of room or space, and will need to tear it all up and start again, Just working out where all the tables and chairs will go is a challenge in itself. Then you start to find that your guests just refuse to fit perfectly into a sensible arrangement. You feel you've just about got there and then realise that several of the children are on the opposite side of the room to the toilets, and a couple of elderly guests have been placed right next to where the speakers will be.
Be prepared to get through a lot of paper and pens doing this. Oh, and don't forget that just when you have it cracked one or two of your guests will call to say they can't come after all, and then you might find yourself either having to completely rearrange things, tearing up your list or walking round town trying to find someone reasonably similar to replace them with.
The second stage of developing a wedding seating chart is to convert your sketched plan into something that can be displayed at the entrance to the reception for all your guests to see, so that they can head straight to their tables. Unless you're an artist who dabbles in calligraphy then you may find this something of a stressful and very time-consuming task.
The third stage, just when you think you've completed everything is to create all of the place cards that correspond to your wedding seating chart and lay them out on the tables.
