The Shotgun As A Weapon, The Only Weapon Of Choice For A Family Trying To Survive

For the Patriot operating with just one firearm, the shotgun can handle it all as long as the right varieties of shotgun shells are kept on hand. In my opinion a good supply of #6 and #7.5 sizes shot for hunting squirrels rabbits and upland birds. My choice of defensive round begins and ends with 00buckshot. Some of the other buck shot rounds such as #3 and #4 Buck offer more pellets in each shot shell, but 00Buck has bigger pellets which is important in my opinion as you may only hit your target with a couple of pellets so the bigger the better in my opinion (especially if your target is shooting back).
A generous supply of slugs will take care of any large game that will need to be taken or to add to versatility of the defensive use of the gun.
Barrel lengths for the 12ga very in range from 18-30 inches with 26-28 being the usual size found on guns designed for bird hunting. Most modern barrels in this length come equipped with removable choke tubes. These barrel lengths are very difficult to use in close quarters and can be tiresome to carry all day.
Many defense models are found with either and 18 or 20 barrel on them and are usually cylinder bore (no choke constriction to tighten shot pattern) These guns are fine for close quarter work and close in shooting but the lack of a choke and the short barrel length limits there hunting efficiency.
My choice for the
one gun survivalist battery would be a 24 inch model as it offers a good compromise in my opinion between a full on defense shotgun and a hunting shotgun.
Many of the 24 models available today are designed as Turkey hunting guns. This basically means they usually have removable choke tubes, thicker recoil pads, barrel porting and rifle sights, and the guns themselves are often camouflage. These same features that make the gun desirable for Turkey hunting make it and ideal gun for the One Gun Survivalist.
With a shotgun setup like this, recoil from firing hard kicking rounds such as slugs and buckshot will be reduced with the Turkey guns thick recoil pad and ported barrel. The guns removable choke tubes will allow the survivalist to tune his shot pattern to the game he is pursuing. And the turkey guns iron sights will aid in more accurate shooting when using slugs and shot (over shotguns only equipped with a standard bead front sight).
Though most survivalist have a battery of firearms to choose from, if I were to chose only one to head for the hills with I would not feel under gunned or at a disadvantage with a reliable 12 gauge pump shotgun.About the Author:
