You are finally in a committed relationship, and everything is going smoothly. Your significant other is ready to have you meet the family, and you are terrified. You want to make a good impression on them, and set yourself up for good familial relationships with them in the future. There are a few simple tips to follow to ensure a great first impression on your soon-to-be future family. 1. Don't Stress First, do not stress. Naturally, you will want to know what the family is like, what to expect, and how to respond. However going through drills of possible conversations and pulling out hair trying to pick an outfit will do nothing. Remember, fear can be spotted a mile away. 2. Dress Dress like you would if you were visiting your own family. As the rule goes, stay away from talking about religion and politics, in this case, during the whole meeting. Everything else you do should accurately tell them about you. You want to be yourself and show the family that you are confident, happy, and compatible with their son or daughter. 3. Be Yourself Next, be yourself. The only thing more easily spotted than fear is something fake. Do not attempt to inflate your achievements or appear to be something you are not. People appreciate other down to earth people. Being around a person who is obviously putting on airs is simply uncomfortable for everyone involved. Show that you accept yourself, and the family will too. 4. Engage and interact. Sitting pretty like a porcelain doll will do nothing but prevent the family from being able to get to know you. Engage in conversations with everybody, but do not overstep your bounds. When the conversation seems to be all about you, ask questions to engage others. Show that you can interact with everyone and that you will be a great addition to the family. Although a million thoughts will be running through your head before and during you meeting the family, hold on to only these four. Relax, be yourself, and interact. The chances are high that the family will be much like your own. Indeed, they have already heard good things about you from your significant other, so you need not worry. If you like your significant other, the product of the family you are about to meet, it is likely that you will like the family as well.
