The Paleolithic Diet

One of the more interesting diets out there is the Paleolithic diet, also known as the caveman diet or stone age diet. The whole idea behind this diet, as you may have already guessed, is to reproduce the kind of diet we would be consuming if we were living in the Paleolithic age. Now it is difficult to know exactly how our ancient ancestors actually ate since the Paleolithic age was over two million years ago, but we do have a reasonable approximation.

It is generally believed that our ancient ancestors ate a lot of fresh meat, wild fruits and vegetables, as well as plenty of seeds and nuts. Obviously this era was entirely void of any processed food whatsoever, hence the whole concept and appeal of this diet involves staying away from processed food. Now as the food industry develops our sense of what processed means has changed, but in the case of the Paleolithic diet we aren't just talking about fast food we're talking about all grains and legumes as well, these are products of agrarian society which is itself a relatively recent development. This diet is pursued by many who wish to lose weight, however it is also practiced by athletes and by those simply wanting to regulate their blood sugar and blood pressure levels.

Many of the hardcore followers of this diet insist that all the food they consume must be raw, however this is not necessary. What is necessary is not to fry any of the food, when you cook food for the Paleolithic diet it should be lightly cooked, steamed, baked, or grilled. Furthermore all the meat and eggs used must be organic or free-range, this will significantly reduce the amount of bacteria in the meat, and the meats should be very lean.

Remember that legumes are out of the question, so forget about peas or beans, but vegetables should play a large role in this diet. All the vegetables you consume should be the kind of vegetables which can be consumed raw; kale is a good example and is very popular amongst those practicing the Paleolithic diet.

Basically all fruits are allowed, but they must be raw and whole, dried fruits and fruit juices are generally not allowed. Other than peanuts, which aren't actually nuts anyways, all nuts and seeds can be consumed and are highly recommended. Vegetable oils are allowed as long as they are unprocessed, and tea is fine if taken without milk and only consumed in moderate quantities.

If you're looking for a totally clean and largely raw diet to try than this diet might be the one for you. This diet will certainly make it easier to lose weight and will be much healthier than other diets out there as you will be avoiding a host of chemicals and toxins found in today's typical processed foods.
