I've been on both of these diets. Before I committed to and lost a lot on the diet I am currently on, I wondered what exactly were the differences between these and which would work better for me. Like many people, I assumed that since both offered shakes and bars, then they were pretty much the same. I've since learned that they aren't. In this article, I will highlight some of the similarities and differences between them to help you determine which may work better for you.
Similarities:
They Are Both Meal Replacements: With both of these plans, you will replace what you would normally eat with foods that are provided to you on the plan. Both ask that you add in your own healthful fresh foods so that you aren't just eating prepackaged diet foods all day. These types of diets have become very popular as many people just do not have the time, discipline, or knowledge to research, shop for, or prepare their own foods. Convenience has become more and more important as people become more and more busy.
They Both Offer Shakes And Bars, (But One Taste Better To Me): Both of these plans offer shakes and bars as mainstays of their programs. However, slim fast doesn't taste much different now than it tasted when I first tried it in my early twenties. It can taste chalky and thick with a weird after taste. And, the bars are crumbly and dry, at least to me. I find the medifast shakes to be much more convincing and decent tasting, with the bars having a chewier, more pleasant texture, especially the peanut butter variety.
The Key Differences:
The Food Choices And Variety Available: Slim Fast pretty much offers mostly shakes and bars and asks you to supplement the rest of your food throughout the day. Therefore, you'll eat the same foods over and over and will have to do a bit more cooking. As a concrete example, you really only eat the full plan at breakfast, but are asked to make your own lunch and dinner, while supplementing these meals with shakes or bars. If you like this control and enjoy preparing meals, you well may prefer this.
In contrast, with medifast, you eat the diet meals most of the day except for once, usually at dinner, where you prepare one healthful meal. And, you aren't limited to just two different foods. There are over seventy choices. There is chili, pudding, cappuccino, eggs, stew, oatmeal, etc., each with different flavors available. Again, if you really like food prep and meal planning, you won't be doing a lot of that with this plan as most of the work is done for you.
Nutrition And Ketosis: Medifast is said to be so effective because it puts your body into ketosis which means that because you're eating a high amount of protein and a low amount of carbs, your body is tricked into burning it's own fat reserves.
But, in order for this to work effectively, you need to actually be limiting your carbohydrates. So, if you're going to compare apples to apples, let's compare the two plans' shakes. Slim fast's has almost twenty grams of sugar and almost thirty carbs. Medifast, in comparison, keeps their shakes in the 5 grams of sugar range and the ten grams of carbohydrates range - at least 1/4 to 1/3 less of the bad stuff.
So, in my opinion, if you're just looking for a quick fix and you don't mind being limited to shakes and bars, slim fast may work short term. However, if you're looking at the long term, want to loose a larger amount of weight, or want more food choices, medifast seemed to me to be the better option.
