The Massive Beautiful Live Oak
There is a secret place I love to visit in the Deep South
. If you walk down a sandy old road in Florida near one of many rivers you will find yourself walking beneath the sweeping branches of the massive and beautiful Live Oak tree. These trees are nearly always draped in Spanish moss which adds to the twisting and weeping appearance many of us find so mysterious.
Aside from the various species of palm trees you may think of lining the beaches, the Live Oak is probably the south's most memorable tree. They are not just limited to Florida however, they do grow as far up as northern Georgia and as far west as California. A sturdy tree, they have been known to withstand many hurricanes and tornadoes without being uprooted.
These trees live a really long time, some are thousands of years old and still living today, not all species of trees can claim such a lifespan. If you were to plant a tree today it is possible your own great, great, great, great, grandchildren might someday sit beneath its shade sipping tea, just as you did. This makes it a popular choice for homeowners looking for trees to place on their own property.
You can find wholesale nurseries online to get a really good deal on a field grown live oak tree. Most landscape companies or garden centers will charge much more per tree than buying a tree direct from a nursery. It might take you a little more leg-work but it is worth it. We are talking hundreds of saved dollars here, and in this economy nobody wants to waste money when they could be saving it right? Right.
Make sure you do plan on finding a company to plant these massive trees, even though the one you get will be only a few years old, they are really heavy! Most landscape or garden companies will offer different rates so shop around, and let them know you are shopping for the best rate, they might even go a little lower. Once you have someone who can help with the planting process you will be all set, no middle man.
Since I live too far north now to enjoy this tree I have to sit back and envy those who can. My parents however enjoy dozens of them all around their north Florida property and I always enjoy my visits. Remember my secret place? I suppose it's not really "so" secret but being under those trees when I visit returns me to that place where I can remember childhood imaginings of secret gardens and hidden mysteries.
