The Man "Behind The Keys"-The 5 Browns
The beginning of my connection with The 5 Browns began on August 23, 1998 while I was channel surfing one night and saw 11 year old Ryan Brown performing (and playing his heart out) on a PBS Talent Competition. I knew I had to find him for a new teen group I was putting together. Not having any luck locating him through PBS the next morning, as outlined in detail in The 5 Brown's book "Life Between The Keys," I then downloaded the white pages from the Internet for Alpine, Utah and began my pursuit of trying to find the right Brown family.
After finally connecting with Ryan Brown's father, Keith Brown, I realized not long into the conversation that I was barking up the wrong tree thinking that I could turn Ryan into the next Justin Timberlake. Ryan was strictly all about classical music and playing pop music was not even on his radar screen. However, toward the end of the phone conversation Keith Brown uttered the magical words that would forever change the lives of him, his wife Lisa, and his 5 children, "I don't know if you're interested or not, but there are 4 more at home like that."
What happened next is something only dreams are made of. I then became their personal manager and producer and after using all my experience and contacts in the music business, which included 36 gold and platinum albums and 2 Grammy nominations, The Brown family went on to achieve three #1 CD's, played to sold out performances, TV appearances on 60 Minutes, Oprah, Jay Leno, The View, Good Morning America, Ellen, etc.and became the first family of Classical Music.
An email of February 24, 2003 from Gregory Brown to Joel Diamond summed up at that time the true desire and objective of the Browns: "Dear Mr. Diamond,
My family has been given a rare and great gift that I know could help change the way classical music is perceived by Americans. I genuinely believe that with the right help, we could really have the ability to make sure classical music is not only popular but quite cool."
It was not easy being faced with the gargantuan job and uncharted waters of having to convince record labels and agents that 5 Steinway pianos can be recorded and booked on a stage or TV Show. I even received a personal note from George Martin (The Beatles) who I sought to help me produce the kids and his reason for turning me down was, "5 pianos playing together in the studio will be too muddy and never clean enough to record." Undeterred, I then booked Steinway Hall on West 57th Street in New York City to hold my showcases. Probably just out of curiosity almost every major record label and booking agency attended and thereafter made an offer. Along with the family, we chose Sony/Red Seal Records as their first major record label, high profile music attorney Fred Davis, ICM for personal appearances, a deal with Steinway for the Browns to become exclusive Steinway artists, a major book deal with Phoenix Books, and PR firm, Rogers and Cowan.
It was during this time that I realized the closeness of the family and I decided to bring Keith Brown on as my co-manager, knowing it would be an ideal situation to have their father and often times mother on the road, and never having to break up the family.
Then at the end of 2008, my entire world with The 5 Browns began to unravel. Little did I know the firestorm I was about to walk into and even more important, "why I was walking into it! The 5 Browns and I had breakfast on the morning of December 19, 2008 and they started out the conversation by saying "we all love you and appreciate everything that you have done for us, and if it had not been for you, wewould have no career."
Then the bomb dropped - they told me they must immediately break all ties with their father and in as much as I brought their father in to co-manage alongwith me, I had become collateral damage and I had to go as well. Certainly I tried to delve deeper as to why they were making this decision, and their reply was that is was a very tough decision that the five of them had to make and they could not get into it with me at that time. Which now brings us up to February, 2011 and the 5 Browns' saga reaches a point of intensity that in a million years I could have never seen coming.
Being the father of an 18 year old girl, I find what Keith did to be unfathomable. If I had known or even had the slightest inclination of what had transpired, I would have never brought Keith Brown on to co-manage with me.
My only regret is that the kids did not confide in me so I could have been there for them with emotional support never knowing all the painful suffering they were going through. I admire the courage of Deondra, Desireae, and Melody to step up and speak out. My respect and love for Deondra, Desireae, Melody, Gregory and Ryan has always been and now more than ever, unwavering and steadfast.
It is hard to believe, former friend and confidant, Keith Brown, who I spent literally hundreds of hours with, is now in jail. With every negative there is a positive and I hope The 5 Browns will continue to to deliver their message of classical music to even now a much wider audience and allow triumph to win over evil.
