The HCG diet protocol is based on Dr. Simeons' book entitled "Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity". Dr. Simeons conducted years of research and the HCG diet protocol has helped many achieve their weight loss goals. Most people familiar with the HCG diet protocol are aware that dieters take HCG drops while adhering to a 500 calorie a day diet. What many do not realize is that the protocol also includes an HCG maintenance diet.

Simply taking the HCG drops and following the low calorie diet protocol will not result in sustainable weight loss. The HCG maintenance diet allows you to increase your overall daily calories based on your BMR (basal metabolic rate), which is typically a minimum of 1500 a day for woman and 1800 a day for men. At the same time you are allowed to add a substantial selection of foods to your diet.

During week one of the HCG maintenance diet you can increase the variety of meats, fruits, vegetables, meat and condiments. It is imperative that you stick to the list of approved foods. Sugars and starches are not allowed, not even melba toast. You will need to weigh yourself every day and make sure your weight isn't increasing.

During week two of the maintenance diet you will start to add some "caution foods". Some examples of caution foods include bacon, hot dogs, nuts, cheese, milk, yogurt and additional condiments such as ketchup and salad dressings. You can add 1-2 of these caution foods a day. Remember to watch the sugar levels in your caution foods.

In the 3rd week of the HCG maintenance diet, if your weight remains stabilized, you can have 2-3 caution foods a day. If your weight stabilized during this 21 day period you can move on to the next part of the maintenance diet.

In the last three weeks of the HCG maintenance diet you will slowly add carbohydrates (sugars and starches) to your diet. You will start by adding one carb food per day for week 4 of maintenance. In week 5 you will add a second carb food per day. In week 6 you will start combining carb foods at meals.

As with every step of the HCG diet protocol, you must follow the guidelines of the HCG maintenance plan carefully and continue to monitor your weight. At the end of six weeks, if your weight is stabilized you can either move to the life phase or do another round of HCG drops.
