The Ceremony and Customs of Weddings

Across all nations, cultures, religions and demographic distinctions between people, there exists a single sacred ritual that binds a man to a woman so that they can live together as a family and contribute in the most meaningful to the human society. That ritual is what we call a wedding. A wedding ritual, no matter where it takes place in the world, will usually have the following similarities:

1) A wedding is a social function: There have to be guests at a wedding (or the reception ceremony that is held after the wedding) ceremony. The guests of course include near and distant relatives, family members, friends, professional colleagues etc. Even if the wedding takes place in a formal, legal way, you need to have at least two witnesses to testify and sign on a binding document.

2) The act of wedding is of religious significance: A wedding/marriage cannot take place without the presence of a "holy person" who recites some verses from his/her religions most holy book.

3) Special garments/clothes are worn by the bride and the groom that are made especially for the occasion. The garments worn, vary as per the religion and ethnicity of the bride and groom, however, the clothes worn by them are of cultural significance and usually depict some qualities that are expected from both the bride and the groom.

4) Celebrations: A wedding is also a celebration of the fact that two people's lives will be changed for the better from that day onwards. Like every celebration, the wedding ceremony usually includes dancing and music and takes place in an atmosphere of happiness and joy.

The customs that accompany each wedding vary, and depend upon various factors like religion, culture, ethnicity, financial condition of both the families, demography etc, but the goal of wedding the wedding ceremony remains the same to unite two people in a holy bond for the betterment of the individuals and the society itself and also for the progression of the human race.

A wedding ceremony is usually followed by a reception ceremony. Drinks and food are served to the guests and gifts and well wishes are given to the bride and groom by the guests that have attended. The customs for this ceremony too vary.

To sum up, the custom of weddings will stay as long as the sanctity of the wedding ceremony remains.
