The Amazing Truth About Fat Loss Diets
Depending on what you consume and how much you exercise
, fat loss diets can be both good and bad. Most fat loss diets require that you restrict your calories to a thousand or less calories per day.
Restricting your calories to such an extent makes your body feel like it is never going to eat again, and so it goes into starvation mode. As a result, your body starts preparing for the next famine by holding on to every calorie it can. When you either cheat on your diet or go back to eating regular food, you begin to gain fat fast.
This is why most fat loss diets are less than effective. You end up gaining back all the fat that was lost, and often gain back more than you have previously. Since your body does not like to starve, it is a good idea to create only a very slight calorie deficit instead of cutting back on a thousand calories or less per day.
To create a slight calorie deficit, the first thing you need to do is to calculate the calories that your body needs on a daily basis to maintain its current weight. The Harris-Benedict Formula and The Katch-McArdle Formula are the two tools that can be used to calculate your daily caloric requirement.
Once you are aware of your daily caloric requirement, simply reduce 15% to 20% from it so as to find your calorie intake for fat loss. Reducing your calorie intake by this small amount will not make you prone to putting back on any fat that you have lost, because it will not trigger a starvation response.
There are fat loss diets. such as the cabbage soup diets and celery and cream cheese diets, that are designed for crash dieting. These diets suggest that you eat only one or two different kinds of foods. You are allowed to eat as much of these foods as you like, as long as you stay away from all other types of foods. You really do not need a doctorate in biology to figure out how wrong this is.
When you are on such fat loss diets, you will lose some weight initially; however, your body will not be receiving the nutrition that it needs. To make matters worse, you tend to easily gain the weight back on, and then some, because these diets definitely trigger the starvation response.
The best fat loss diets prescribe plenty of exercise as well as a healthy diet. Good fat loss diets result from this perfect mix. Your body starts to burn calories more effectively and quickly when you exercise, because exercise increases your metabolic rate.
Proper fat loss diets make sure that you are getting enough protein so as to build lean muscle. You start to burn calories faster than you would otherwise as the increase in muscle mass raises your metabolic rate.
The slight reduction in calories does not act against the elevated metabolic rate, so you truly burn calories and lose weight in a healthy way.
The market is filled with thousands of books on fat loss diets that make you eat unusual combinations of foods or impose strict limits on the amount of calories you consume. You cannot expect these diets to work.
