Test Drive Tips When Purchasing A Used Van

Whether you need to purchase a van for business or personal use you will want to

ensure that you are getting the most for your money and that your recent purchase will not incur additional unexpected costs further down the line. If you have reached the stage of taking a potential used van for a test drive then you should already be aware of what the market value is, any common faults that may arise in that particular model and also have a thorough check of the vehicle documentation including the V5C registration documents and all the relevant MOT certificates.

When you arrange a viewing and vehicle test drive you should always make sure that it takes place during daylight hours and try to avoid undertaking a viewing during the rain as water can disguise scratches and discolouration. Make sure you look at the vehicle from all angles and check the bodywork for any problematic dents or signs of repair. If you are happy with what you see then ask to take the van for a test drive. Always check that the engine has been started from cold. You can tell by feeling the bonnet to see if it is warm.

Have a look at the space within the van. Will you be able to store everything you need? Is it easily accessible and is there enough room in the front? When you sit in the drivers seat can you adjust the seat and steering wheel so that you are comfortable and able to reach all of the controls easily? Can you see out of the vehicle properly and what are the blind spots like? A good way to test this is by reversing into a parking space.

When you start up the engine check that it is quiet. Listen for rattles that may indicate problems with the suspension. Check the steering and brakes to make sure that the steering is responsive and the brakes stop the car effectively and in a straight line. When you run through the gears is the transition smooth without crunching? If the biting point of the clutch is very high then this could be an indication that the clutch is worn and will need to be changed soon.

Look at the car tyres and make sure that they have more than 3mm of tread, check that there is a spare too. Make sure there are no warning lights on when the vehicle engine is on and check that the van has airbags and properly functional seatbelts that are not worn. Check all of the lights and windscreen wipers and washers look out for any potential leaks. Make sure that all of the windows and locks work properly and that the key and spare key are present.
