Global Tourism Industry Woos Indian Couples To Choose Exotic Weddings Abroad

Indian couples are being lured away from their home weddings by global tourism boards

and hotels who are encouraging weddings abroad in exotic locations and luxury venues.

Indian weddings are famous for their large guest numbers and lavish style, and duration of nearly a week, and now several countries are looking to entice Indian brides and grooms to experience their special event with destination weddings at luxury venues or locations abroad.

The Indian weddings market has a reported turnover of US$20 billion and tourism boards and hotel groups from all over the world are keen to attract couples to choose their countries as the setting for weddings abroad.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Sands Corporation of Las Vegas, who own new hotels in Macau and Singapore, have already started the process to lure these Indian couples away from home weddings.

Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Chattan Kunjara Nu Ayudha, said: "Weddings are one of the most profitable niche tourism markets in the world and India with its famously opulent weddings is on top of everybody's wish list. We are planning a new advertising campaign and will offer special packages and sops to attract Indian couples."

The new seven-star multi-billion dollar hotel in Singapore, Marina Bay Sands, recently held a road show in India where it attempted to attract Indian couples to consider weddings abroad at the property by offering 'Pheras in the Sky' and glamorous casino receptions.

CEO of the luxury hotel, Sheldon Anderson, explained: "Indian weddings are famous worldwide for their opulence and they are definitely part of our target market."

With the peak wedding season just a couple of months away, Prashant Thyagarajan, a Mumbai-based wedding planner, commented on the latest trend for couples to outdo each other with dazzling weddings and the increasing interest in getting married abroad.

"The last trend was to have an opulent traditional wedding like Vikram Chatwal's in Delhi. Now its more romantic weddings in an exotic settings like France. Many of my clients want beach weddings, for example in the Maldives," he said.
