Stomach Balloons – Risk Free Weight Loss Surgery – Is It True?
Stomach Balloons Risk Free Weight Loss Surgery Is It True
?
The last 2 decades have offered the weight loss market a variety of different surgical and cosmetic procedures for combating obesity gastric bypass and laparoscopic gastric band included. However despite the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services directive in 2006 which required the regulations that all Medical Centres and Cosmetic Centres to have qualified and experiences cosmetic surgeons and equipment, these types of weight loss surgeries are still incredibly risky and life threatening.
Even considering the fact that recent modifications where complication rates have dropped by 2.2% from 12.2% of patients to 10%, and the 30 day mortality have reduced from 0.28% to 0.20%. These improvements are not enough when you add to the equation the percentage of obese individuals who willing to undergo these surgeries every single year.
However, this could soon all be changing on the horizon for obese patients if the ReShape Medical's dual action balloon system is approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

Designed to help obese patients who fall just below or above the BMI guidelines for gastric bypass and laparoscopic gastric band placements surgeries or who are considered to be too young (under18) for such intensive surgeries; the double-balloon mechanism or device could easily support this overlooked group of individuals.
How does it work?
In its current condition, the double-balloon system is inserted into a patient's throat using an attached thin tube before being inflated (pumped} with saline. As these 2 oval shape balloons are inflated, patients will begin to feel full and will naturally be able to reduce their meal portions and start losing their weight.
More importantly, once patients reach their target weight loss goal, this balloon device can easily be deflated and removed from the stomach without being surgically removed.
As we speak, this balloon device is planned to perform its first clinical trial soon where 30 volunteers across 3 medical centres will be implanted with this device. Should it prove safe and effective, this research will be applied to 350 volunteers across 10 medical centres and eventually will be presented to the FDA for approval.
Is the balloon safe? Does it work?
It is undisputable that this double balloon mechanism could potentially help hundreds of consumers who are either too young for gastric bypasses or suffer from diabetes, heart disease and severe joint problems to lose weight, but this dual action balloon has got a long way to go before it is approved.
In 1984 a similar single balloon device was created by Garren-Edwards and was implanted into patients. However, with no backup membrane to protect it from punctures, this balloon device was prone to bursting or leaking and entering into the small intestine where it caused serious blockages. As a result this product was quickly taken off the market.
