Skin Problems During Pregnancy

Are you plagued by pregnant skin problems? It's already no fun feeling nauseous

, tired, bloated and heavy. Having skin problems on top of that just makes things even worse right? At this point, you probably scoff every time you see advertisements featuring pregnant women with glowing and flawless skin. Well, it's unfortunate that pregnant skin problems are a common thing, no thanks to crazy hormones.

The "pregnancy mask", also referred to as chloasma or melasma, are the brown spots that can show up on the face as a result of the pregnancy hormones (estrogen and progesterone) stimulating the melanin cells, producing more pigment in an erratic fashion (blotches). This can also happen to those taking birth control pills. A way to minimize the severity of the dark patches would be to wear sunscreen, or a moisturizer containing UV protection and limit your time in the sun.

One common method of relieving acne for pregnant women is washing their faces at least twice a day. When this is done, it is wise to use a mild soap. Stronger versions have been known to cause acne conditions to worsen. It is important to note that when washing your face, you should not scrub. Scrubbing the skin is not good for acne occurrences.

Itching is also common for pregnant women. As the skin in the breast and abdomen get stretched, you may feel itchy. But if the itching continues and becomes more serious, you may need to consult the doctors. Serious itching can be a symptom of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). If you are just experiencing normal itching, you can apply anti-itch cream such as calamine lotion or even olive oil or aloe gel for soothing.

Women who complain of having dry skin may have to face more problems during their pregnancy. Dry skin gets aggravated during pregnancy because your body fluids and water present in your blood are in high demand. Your growing child needs them for nourishment. Your only weapon is water. Therefore drink ample of water. You can use moisturizers and sun block creams to revitalize your skin.

Rashes appear due to irritation of the skin. One common pregnancy rash is called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP). This is the most frequently seen condition specific to pregnancy. Women with PUPPP demonstrate a rash which starts on the abdomen and can spread to the breasts, arms, thighs, and buttocks.

Hyperpigmentation is also present in melasma. This is a tan or dark skin discoloration that is common in a pregnant woman's face; in fact, melasma is often referred to as the mask of pregnancy. This skin condition affects around 70 percent of pregnancies and also some women who are using oral contraceptives.

Some women are simply lucky with more elastic skin meaning they wont get stretch marks as their skin is more elastic. You can't stop a stretch mark, but you can try to minimise them by avoiding putting on weight too rapidly, rubbing oil or lotion high in vitamin E over your abdomen to keep it supple, eating a healthy diet and undertaking gentle exercise.
