Single Parents and Moving On

Single Parents and Moving On

When someone mentions that one should start over, it is very much a fact that it is easier said than done. Losing a spouse to death, a divorce, or the other woman, no matter how strong or prepared one has been for the separation, the emotional distress is more than enough to take its toll that's without taking the financial aspect in consideration just yet. So is there a way for single parents to get around such a drastic change in their lives? Yes! Unlike before, remember that now, one has a child or children to look after, one has a family. It may seem like a depressing road ahead, but remember the saying that when one door closes, another one opens. This part of one's life will definitely serve as a chance for more growth. Be one of the many single parents who have gone and proved that they are more than enough to face the world with their heads held high!

Before anything else, take some time to grieve whatever the reason for the separation has been. It is wise to take some time off whatever one is doing and come to terms with what just happened. Ignoring or putting it in the back of one's mind will be a charade that can only last for so long. Instead of breaking down unexpectedly, face reality by accepting what transpired. Next, when one feels completely lost and out of focus, get a pen and paper. Write down a schedule and follow it; think of time management as one's best friend. Also, do not forget to include some time for oneself. While attending to the children's needs, it may be a good idea to also do something that one enjoys doing. Take some time to heal and try to get some rest; feel refreshed by the fact that each day is a new adventure a guaranteed rollercoaster ride. But if one feels the need to just break down and cry? Go ahead. No one is supposed to tell one how to feel. The important thing is to believe that getting back on track is something that is possible, thought it will take some time and a whole lot of patience. Each day is a character building process.

One thing single parents should practice is to develop a new love and confidence for themselves, because everyone knows it is not going to be (and it never was) an easy job. Responsibilities are tripled, and though a sole parent looks like he or she can do anything, it is a necessity that one should learn to accept or find help when needed. It is not wrong to show weakness during this tough phase in one's life. Though having the children around will not be one's sole purpose for living, it will be a good enough reminder that though one is single again, life does not stop without him or her. Life goes on and so shall one in the path to moving on.
