The Pain of Watching Your Parents Age

The Pain of Watching Your Parents Age

Most often middle aged individuals have less patience with their aging parents than they do with their kids. This is most sad in many ways. Is it because our parents have in some respects outgrown their usefulness? It may seem that way by our actions sometimes. If you take a really close look at it, and perhaps analyze your feelings a bit in respect to your aging parents, you may understand better why you are so quite tempered and easily irritated by them.

In many cases deep down we may be having problems accepting the fact that our parents have entered into the golden years. They are more tired than what we remember, they walk a little slower, and they are the last ones to finish their meals. By recognizing these facts, it means that we must also recognize the fact that they may not be with us for all that much longer. This for many of us is an unbearable thought, and perhaps is the underlying factor of why we are irritated so easily by their actions.

It is painful to think about not having ones parents around. It doesn't matter whether you are in your middle years or not and are quite self sufficient. Your Mom and Dad have always been there in varying degrees throughout your life, and even though you are an adult, there is just that little bit of fear of being totally on your own no matter what their age.

In reality each of the little signs of age that is showing in them is a reminder to you that some day you will have to let go. Although not a pleasant thought, coming to grips with that now may allow you to enjoy them more now while they are here, rather than be remorseful and feeling guilty once they pass.

So it's time for a parent reality check. It's going to hurt, and you may be thinking why subject yourself to this pain now. Simply because it may be the very fear of that pain of loss, that is keeping your back from holding onto every precious moment that you have left with them.

They are still here, they are still your parents, so go ahead, look beyond the years and enjoy them.
