Save on Heating with the Government’s Boiler Scrappage Scheme
For those of us keen on reducing our heating bills and helping the environment by
cutting down on our carbon envisions, a new scheme to get money off a brand new boiler is being offered by the UK Government. Similar to the car scrappage scheme that ran last year where old bangers could be traded in for a new car and the Government would offer a cash rebate; they are now offering 400, potentially doubling to 800 to 125,000 households that have a so-called G-rated boiler. A G rated boiler is one that is deemed inefficient and has reached a certain age, the Energy Saving Trusts website has details on exactly who qualifies. For those of us that are trying to live an eco friendly lifestyle this is good news as inefficient heating systems can create excess amounts of greenhouse gas for little reward. Unfortunately the cost of a getting a new boiler installed usually costs in excess of 2,000 so this cash back scheme could go a long way to help. There other ways of course to help cut down on wastage and reduce heating costs. Insulation is a key area where heat can be loss and for the sake of a couple of hundred pounds new insulation can pay for itself in a year. Maximising the heat produced from the radiators is another great way of reducing both costs and greenhouse emissions. There are several methods to do this but they usually involve reflecting the heat from the back of the radiator back into the room. Heatkeeping radiator panels and reflective radiator foil are two approaches at this. They work quite well and you can save quite a lot on your bills as the lost heat that is normally soaked into the wall is bounced back into the room allowing you to tun the thermostat down. Draft excluders and other heat loss gadgets available such as a chimney balloon that prevent the heat escaping and the cold from getting in.
