Risks Not Apparent to Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Patients

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a disorder that affects over 20 million people in the United States. The condition occurs when the ligaments and cartilage within the knee deteriorate to the point where the bones end up in constant contact. When this happens, every day activities can be very painful as there is then no cushion for the joint. Typically, the only way to fix osteoarthritis after it reaches a certain point is to undergo knee replacement surgery, whereby the knee joint is replaced with a synthetic device designed to replicate the knee's normal movement.

One company that specializes in manufacturing such knee replacement devices is Zimmer Holdings Inc., based out of Warsaw, Indiana. The cementless version of Zimmer's NexGen CR-Flex is a popular device, though it has been the subject of a lot of criticism as of late. Allegedly, the devicewhich connects to the thighbone through natural ingrowth rather than a synthetic epoxyhas been prone to premature loosening in patients. Loosening of the device can lead to severe pain in completing any task for which the patient must put any weight on the knee.

Back in 2008, Zimmer had issues with another of its medical implant devicesthe Durom Cup. The Zimmer Durom Cup, a cementless hip implant designed to bond to the patient's hip socket through natural bone ingrowth, much like the NexGen CR-Flex, was failing at higher than accepted rates. As a result, Zimmer issued a recall of the device in July of 2008.

Because the risks of a particular knee device will vary depending on the model that was implanted, it is important for people to know the model they have and keep abreast of any risks that have been identified. One way to do this is to keep a constant dialogue with your doctor regarding your knee replacement device. Additionally, always keeping an eye out for breaking news regarding the device is a good idea. If you do not fully know and understand the risks inherent in your knee replacement device, it will be impossible to take the appropriate measures to protect both your health and your legal rights.

While there has yet to be a Zimmer NexGen knee recall, there could be one in the works if the rate of failure continues to increase in patients who have received the NexGen CR-Flex. The attorneys at the Rottenstein Law Group collectively have more than 25 years of experience fighting against the negligence of irresponsible companies like Zimmer.
