The population of overweight men and obese men is increasing in almost every developed country. In the United States, two-thirds of our population is overweight with half of those in the obese category. Even in China with the lowest rate of obesity, two percent of males and six percent of females can be considered obese.

This dramatic increase in the last 40 to 50 years can be traced to a change in diet and reduced levels of exercise. These two factors are cited by practically every medical study that examines overweight and obese subjects.

That National Center for Health Statistics indicated in 2006 that slightly more men than women were overweight with 74 million overweight men and 69 million overweight women. But, slightly more women were obese, with 30.7 million men and 36.7 million women in the obese category.

Overweight men accumulate fat in their belly, while women accumulate fat in the hips and thighs. It's the men's fat that is far more dangerous. Male fat in the belly does not exist just in the surface layers of the skin. It accumulates internally also, next to and sometimes within the critical internal organs. This can affect internal organs and, for example, lead to a non-alcoholic fatty liver degenerating into cirrhosis of the liver.

In addition, recent studies have shown that men who are overweight show lowered PSA scores that can delay or mask detection of prostrate cancer. While this study was initially done with men who already had prostrate cancer, the study was extended to the general population of men being screened for prostrate cancer.

It is critical that overweight men take positive steps to reduce fatty deposits in the belly. And, as many men find out, reducing belly fat is one of the most difficult tasks any man will ever undertake. It takes a lifestyle change to learn new health habits that must be practiced consistently.

These lifestyle habits counter the causes of obesity. They involve eating more healthy foods in the right proportions and getting exercise. Both these habits are counter to our modern way of life.

The ease of eating in fast food restaurants and consuming manufactured foods is sometimes difficult to overcome. But, men must learn to eat more natural, unprocessed foods, even if it takes more time to eat higher quality meals. Many men will consume the equivalent of four or more cups of sugar a day, often in the form of high fructose corn syrup. This builds fat.

As our workplaces become safer and machines do the heavy and strenuous tasks, men have less need to exert themselves physically. Office workers hardly lift anything heavier than a book. So, time needs to be devoted to exercise to develop and tone the muscles and use up some of the excess calories consumed during the day.

Belly fat in overweight men is dangerous fat. By eating healthy foods in the right proportions and engaging in an exercise program men can lose that fat and return to a healthy physique.
