Outstanding Office Fashion For Men

Workplaces are rarely conducive to cutting edge style; just notice how designers

in the men's fashion world label office-friendly attire as 'evening wear' and not 'cubicle outfits'. Yet that kind of milieu should never force you to drown among the sea of navy suits in the company elevator. A few bold, rakish and slightly off-the-wall pieces might be just the things you need to stand out but still fit in as you go up that corporate ladder.

Add a Pop of Color

Dour gray is the standard uniform of virtually any office, and variations to it only extend as far as black and navy. Paired with a white shirt and some equally boring necktie, the resulting outfit is as humdrum and unimpressive as everyone else's.

Set yourself apart by inserting just one boldly colorful item into the mix. Swap out that old black tie for a more graphic one, or another tie that simply features a bold color like fire engine red. Do up a pastel colored shirt instead of the typical white or, better yet, go with some bold color like mint green and then use a strong, dark necktie to anchor the look. For added style points, have a pocket square that matches your color for the day.

The key to this style sleight of hand is to have just one standout color in your entire outfit. You don't want your shirt clashing with your necktie, which then clashes with the pocket square and then look like a mess of Day Glo. If you're going to have one color shout out loud, then see to it that all your other colors keep to a low whisper.

A Third Party

Suit pants, jacket, shirt and tie, that sums up the office man's daily fashion regimen. But add in another piece, a vest, in this case, via a three-piece suit, and you have a stylish guy who just happens to work at the same desk you do. It's that crucial third piece of the vest that'll set you apart (and above) the two piece-wearing throng.

Plain, solid black is still a good option, but it's not the best approach to this style of suit. A pinstriped black or solid gray choice would be much better, and would offset the sheer gravity of its being a traditional three piece set. Putting the vest in there is enough drama for any outfit, so you can stick with plain shirts and neckties to go with it.

Don't forget to put in those fine details that every gentleman worthy of a three-piece suit should know. The pocket square must be present and immaculate. A substantial watch, preferably one by a well known maker, is a plus. Opt for burnished brown or caramel colored laceups instead of tired old black, and you'll be a style statement at the office.

Brown, Not Black

The black lace-up shoe is one of those ever-present symbols of the working man, besides the medium-sized salary and suburban address. Chances are good that everyone else in the office wears black as well, regardless of the type of shoe. That's exactly why going for brown instead of black kicks is sure to earn you instant office fashion icon status.

Gray suits seem particularly suited to brown shoes, and the gray-brown combination is an excellent alternative to the typical black-black combo you see everyday. Although it's the latter that more often gets attention at the fashion shows and men's boutiques, brown on gray is a classic pairing that's been around for decades. Even men's fashion magazines of the 1960's chronicle such outfits with all manner of shirts, neckties and bags.

Dressing up to go to the office can be a chore, especially if you're the fashion conscious kind who's always on the lookout for new trends. The trick to attracting the right kind of attention at the office is to always keep your outfits subtle and understated. If you happen to be wearing something outlandish, balance it with something solid and simple. A bit of tweaking and practice, and you should have outfits that are the envy of the whole office.
