Oral Yeast Infections: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Oral yeast infection is a common health occurrence which must be a major problem if the yeasts spread and grow rapidly inside the body

. Yeasts normally grow inside the body, but when they grow fast, you should be alarmed and seek treatment.

Basically, this health problem is classified according to four types.

Four types

Moniliasis happens when a thick white or yellow phlegm-like liquid covers the mouth area. Mouth yeast infection is also known as thrush.

Erythematous occurs when patches of red skin peels off the mouth and tongue areas, and when a patient has Angular cheilitis, this peeling skin will have cracks on the corners of the mouth. On the other hand, if the corners of his mouth has a discolored tissue, he has what we call Hyperplastic. If left untreated, it may spread to other parts of his body.

Symptoms

People with oral yeast infection suffer from signs like craving for sweets and starchy food, alcohol and food with large amounts of yeast. Other common symptoms of an oral yeast infection include fatigue, depression, joint/muscle pain, and digestive problems.

Causes

As mentioned, anyone can have this condition, regardless of age and gender. However, young people and older ones are the most susceptible targets, probably because of their immune system. On the other hand, even healthy persons can have it, so this condition does not discriminate.

Oral yeast infection can be triggered by the following: Chemotherapy, stress of an organ transplant, HIV/AIDs, chronic health problems, changes in the blood sugar (if you are diabetic), antibiotics, steroids and iron deficiencies.

Diagnosis

Medical diagnosis is needed to see if you have this condition. Usually, thrush can be checked by having a doctor look at your tongue. Also, he might ask you for other conditions you have like diabetes or HIV, because the presence of health problems like these can trigger yeast overgrowth.

Treatments

Cures for this health problem range from practical, preventive measures to prescription medicines. Examples of medicines usually prescribed by health professionals are Nystatin, Triazoles, Amphotericin B, Candicidin, and Ketoconazole.

Natural cures include capricin tea, artemisia, grapefruit seed extract, gentian, grape seed oil, or homeopathic Cadida silicea.

A patient is advised not to eat sugary or starchy food groups. For women, proper hygiene should be followed - such as wiping the genital after using the toilet, wearing dry and clean underwear, avoiding excessive douching and using unperfumed vaginal wash.

If a child or an infant is infected with oral yeast infection, be sure to check his daily dietary intake. Check his mouth for signs of this health problem. If it has any lesion or signs of this health problem, consult a pediatrician immediately. Usually, sterilizing a baby's pacifier is a good preventive step against the spread of fungi on his mouth.
