On A Wedding Anniversary Say You Care
When it comes to wedding anniversaries Richard Bachs quotation that True love stories never have endings is very apt
. A wedding anniversary is a day for celebrating that fact. In fact a wedding anniversary is a day just to celebrate.
A wedding anniversary is also an emotional day and the speech given on that day should reflect that fact. Usually it is given by a family member or an old friend who knows the couple well. Such a speech will reflect on the history of the couple since their wedding day. They will often mention people who, sadly, are no longer present but who were guests at that wedding. They will speak of the children of that marriage, if that is applicable. Most of all such a speech reflects the love and admiration the speaker has for the couple in question.
The speaker at an anniversary often speaks on behalf of his or her siblings. He or she will speak of how much those parents have meant in their lives. The speaker should tell of the care and the devotion of those couples. It is particularly nice to mention what they have done in going beyond the ordinary. Such parents may have, for instance, worked two jobs to enable their offspring to go to college. A child may have been ill and in hospital for months visited daily by those parents. Whatever those parents have done should be praised publicly, especially if nobody knows about how caring they were in a given situation.
It is good to add a bit of humour to such a speech and normally the speaker will be well aware of family traits, so a bit of teasing is allowable. You might speak about dads lack of D.I.Y. skills or moms inability to park despite all those driving lessons. You could mention dads ability as a golfer or moms sheer inability to keep a secret. Obviously the speaker will know the couple well enough to know how much teasing is acceptable. If they are sensitive you might instead make some light-hearted remarks about marriage rather than about them.
An anniversary is a day when talking about the past is not enough. It is a day when a speaker should wish the couple well in the future too. That is why your speech at an anniversary party should end with a suitable, and preferably, a personal toast.
