Multiple Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a blessed event
Pregnancy is a blessed event. When a multiple pregnancy is discovered, it can be even more exciting, although it is nerve-wracking at the same time. What are some things that make a multiple pregnancy different from a single pregnancy, besides the obvious fact that more than one baby will be born?
Older women are more likely to have a multiple pregnancy. There is an increased ovulation of multiple eggs in older women and this can lead to a higher chance of the woman having a twin pregnancy. Fertility treatments can also lead to an increased chance of multiple pregnancies. It is also evident that women from African backgrounds are more likely to have pregnancies that are twins or more.
Types Of Multiple births
Monozygotic (Identical Twins) - when a single fertilized egg, divides into two separate halves, identical babies are formed. They are genetically identical with same chromosomes.
Dizygotic (Fraternal Twins) - when two different sperms, fertilize two eggs babies unlike each other in characteristics are formed. These types of twin births are more common.
Although multiple pregnancies account for only 3% of all live births, they are responsible for a much larger percentage of pregnancy complications and poor outcomes. 17% of preterm births are the result of multiple pregnancy. 24% of low-birth weight infants are the product of a multiple pregnancy. It is interesting to note however, that although these statistics are accurate, the babies born to parents who have undergone infertility treatments, even if premature or low birth weight, tend to do very well.
A twin pregnancy is generally regarded by the medical profession as carrying a higher risk than single pregnancies; that of course does not necessarily mean that you are liable to experience any problems. Most women with twin pregnancies will complete their confinement without problems and will deliver two healthy babies.
The following are some tips for a healthy pregnancy.
A healthy diet can reduce the problem of low birth weight which is a common problem during multiple pregnancies. Consuming about 300 additional calories along with additional protein and calcium can solve the problem.Expert medical monitoring during pregnancy may reduce the risk of complications such as high blood pressure, twin to twin transfusion and decreased growth rate of the babies.
More commonly their origin depends upon the ripening of two eggs at about the same time and the fertilization of both by two different spermatozoa. The children, in this instance known as double ovum twins, or fraternal twins may be of the same sex or not. On the other hand, single ovum, or identical, twins are always of the same sex; this follows, when one egg and just one spermatozoon are concerned. The incident permitting identical twins to develop from a solitary ovum must occur soon after fertilization when the embryo splits in two.
New pregnancy makes a mother out of a woman. It is a new sensation that her body undergoes. She changes everyday; each new day brings new joy and challenge. In early pregnancy stages, she may feel morning sickness, nausea vomiting tendency, fatigue and lethargy. As her pregnancy progresses, she may need to go to the bathroom frequently and back aches may cause a major problem.
