Men rarely ask if a particular outfit makes their butt look big or complain about

other elements of their physical appearance, but more of them are choosing to do something about the parts they are dissatisfied with. Even with the financial hardships caused by the recession, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) report that more than 581 male breast reductions, or gynaecomastia procedures, were performed in 2009. This is an increase of 80% and makes the procedure the third most popular male cosmetic procedure.

Moobs, also known as man-boobs or male breasts, develop as a result of certain medications, medical problems, diets, obesity, heredity, or even natural age. However, they are embarrassing and very difficult to eliminate. In fact, even cosmetic surgeons are limited to two outpatient surgical techniques.

Plastic surgeons use liposuction to flatten and smooth male breast tissue, much like when performing a tummy tuck procedure. During this procedure, the surgeon uses special tools to break down and suck the fat cells through a small incision, which leaves very little scaring. The second option is to remove the excess skin along with the unwanted fat cells using a single incision around the nipple or along the edge of the breast.

These procedures have a number of similarities. Both techniques are performed under general anesthetic and require a recovery period of a few weeks, during which time a specialized compression garment must be worn. Patients report some swelling, bruising, and pain, but with some pain medication, they manage this easily and are able to enjoy the final results in no time.

UK Plastic Surgery Numbers Up for Male and Female Procedures

Britons underwent more than just gynaecomastia in 2009. Procedures became increasingly popular with men and women. For men, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), breast reduction, otoplasty (ear correction) and liposuction made up the top five procedures while the top five procedures for women include breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, face / neck lift, and tummy tucks. In all, UK plastic surgery clinics performed 36,482 procedures, which is up 6.7% over 2008.

BAAPS reports that not all procedures saw an increase, however. A total of 8% fewer females chose to have facelifts in 2009. Instead, they opted for cheaper alternatives and only 'fixed' the most important features. This resulted in a 6% increase in blepharoplasty, a 25% increase in rhinoplasty, and 43% increase in brow lifts.
