Nanotechnology: When Man Creates Man In God's Image
Nanotechnology: When Man Creates Man In God's Image
Nanotechnology is the most advanced level of the applications of science. It is the study of manipulating matter on an atomic or molecular scale. Imagine what it could possibly do to benefit society. In the field of medicine, nanotechnology could further the advancement of biological studies and find a way to alter genes that result to incurable diseases or abnormalities. After all, nanotechnology is manipulating matter on a molecular level. As far as medicine is concerned, nanotechnology is very useful in changing the face of how the world should treat diseases and abnormalities - by striking it at its most detailed deficiency. The field of medicine is so far the most apparent target for this study.
However, nanotechnology also becomes a controversial issue as its study has unlocked the principles of cloning. In the early years of the second millennium, there are already documented accounts of large cloned creatures. The cloning of animals through an intricate process of genetic modification has been an ongoing process since 1960's, where it was first documented in China that a fish was reproduced other than natural birth. Then as the years progressed, other more complex creatures went through successful duplication. In 1986, a mouse was the first mammal recorded in the history of cloning. In 2000, a Rhesus monkey named Tetra was born out of genetic modification and mechanical duplication. The latest complex creature to be born in an unnatural way is a camel named Injaz, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Then we are about to ask a question that was once a subject of fascination, now turned into something to be greatly feared by many. Are we capable of creating human beings in an artificial manner? It would seem that cloning of human beings will be an inevitable pedestal of nanotechnology science. Biologists embracing the future naturally applauds this possibility. After all, nothing is ever more perfect than finding a way to get rid of diseases that seemed incurable in our time. Genetic defects would be an obstacle that will no longer leave doctors in a dead end.
The religious community considers this advancement as abominable. The more technology progresses, the less humanity takes faith about things that shed little or no understanding at all. What could be more frightening than successfully ridding God in the conception of mankind? Though it sounds philosophically impossible, nanotechnology is such a powerful scientific technology that could achieve into actuality what we normally consider as divine-like. To create a human being devoid of genetic defect is creating something near divine. If nanotechnology and genetic engineering advances further in unprecedented pace, who knows, humanity might be able to unlock the mystery behind mortality and create a way to alter that particular defect. As far as we are theoretically concerned, nanotechnology could make creatures immortal, and these are just among the many other things it could achieve.
If we are to achieve something that is god-like, then where will God be in all of this? For some liberal academic minds, this may not trample on the power of the Omnipotent Being but rather magnify it. After all, accounts in religious monotheistic texts like the Bible relates to God's creation of human beings in His image- beings who are powerful enough to defy Him.
