The Mirror Man Technique, created byLifeWith Personal Coaching and Hypnotherapy is an exercise to discover any mis-match between the attractiveness of a desired partner and that of the would-be suitor. As the previous article suggested, successful relationships are in the main supported by an equal level of attractiveness. Mirror Man is an exercise that is sometimes used in LifeWith dating workshops to re-align the expectations paticipants. In many cases it's the 'wake up and smell the coffee' realisation. There is a common tendency for the Peter Pan complex to occur with gay men, where they don't seem to feel they've aged past their late 20s or early 30s. This can lead guys in their 40s and 50s go for guys in lower age bandings where there is a noticeable difference in attractiveness and vitality.
Step 1.
Obtain a full length picture that represents the type of guy you normally go for (from a magazine, catalogue etc), cut it out and tape it to a full length mirror to the side of your direct eye line.
Step 2.
Relax, take a deep breath and replicate the pose of the person you have taped on your mirror.
Step 3.
Take a long and detailed look at the picture, 20 to 30 seconds minimum.
Step 4.
Grade the attractiveness of the image with a mark out of ten, one being the least attractive and ten being the most attractive. Be honest with this grading.
Step 5.
Look at your reflection, an equally long and detailed look, 20 to 30 seconds minimum.
Step 6.
Grade your reflection in the same way you graded the image - again be honest with this grading.
In a workshop environment the grading of the images can be done as a group exercise. This is useful in increasing the objectivity of the gradings.
If the gradings are the same or similar then there is a distinct possibility that you are looking for the right sort of person. If there is a significant difference then it may be worth while re-assessing the type of person with whom you are looking to form a relationship. Alternatively you can consider addressing areas that would increase your own grading (for example weight loss and a more healthy lifestyle). If you have graded yourself in the 1-3 range then there may well be self esteem issues that need to be worked on with more specialised coaching.
When carried out in a, LifeWith Personal Coaching and Hypnotherapy dating workshop environment, the Mirror Man Technique should be used sensitively there is no need for the grading of participants, or the outcomes, to be part of a group exercise as this would be seriously counterproductive and damaging to group cohesion. It is beneficial to do this exercise just before a natural break so participant can reflect on any insights, and approach the facilitators to discuss any worries they may have. In some cases further one-on-one coaching may be advantageous to work on their individual issues.
