Mikimoto Pearls - A Man and His Dream of Perfection

Among all cultured pearls, there are none as brilliant and magnificent as those produced by the legendary Japanese company Mikimoto. Cultured pearls, also known as artificial pearls, are formed inside mollusks and oysters. A pearl is formed when a foreign entity such as a sandcorn enters into the fragile membrane of the shellfish. In orcer to protect itself, the mollusk or oyster encapsules the sandcorn in layers of a crystalline substance called nacre. These layers which grow in numbers eventually hardens and becomes a pearl. Modern pearls are produced this way artificially. Mikimoto was one of the pioneers of this method.

It's common belief that Mikimoto invented this process of cultivation, but that is not entirely true. The concept of cultivation was known at the time, but he was a driving force in developing modern techniques and more importantly played a big factor in making this known around the world. As the son of a restaurant owner, no one would have guessed that his name would live on as the most famous brand of pearls.

His first many tries at the cultivation process were failures, but like all other inventors, his setbacks did not stop him. He continued to experiment with water temperature and tidal conditions until he finally succeeded.

The turning point finally came in July, 1883, when caught by surprise, his wife Ume found a magnificent artificial pearl inside one of the oysters. That one success was enough to get things moving fast and when Mikimoto died in 1954, his pearls were known all over the world and his name would now be immortal.
