Men's Style Tricks: Suits For All Occasions
Men's suits are generally viewed as rigid, structured style pieces that are no good for any event outside of an office or formal wedding
. But the average two piece single breasted men's suit is good for a very wide range of occasions, and is much more versatile than is typically thought. The secret to bringing a single suit from office party to garden brunch is in what you style with it, in all the other pieces that you wear to the occasion.
Sneakers
Justin Timberlake's now popular style, he did it for practical and not sartorial reasons, by the way, involves wearing a pair of casual kicks with a not-so-casual suit. Watch any of his concerts and you'd agree that this men's fashion icon was able to give you a much wider berth with regard to how formal, or casual, your suit can be.
Timberlake puts together both extremes of the formality scale with a tailored three-piece suit finished off with a pair of contrasting white kicks. A less risky way to do it is to stick to the two-piece variety, skip the necktie and leave a couple of buttons on your shirt open. And if it's just a garden lunch with the family on your agenda, you could even swap out the shirt for a more comfortable polo shirt in some light, contrasting color.
Best done with a navy suit, the most important thing to make this look work is to keep the sneakers simple and classic. Men's fashion has seen a number of notable examples like the Jack Purcell from Converse or the Samba from Adidas. The fact that it's a sneaker is dramatic enough, so you need not add much other excitement into the mix.
Tees
Yes, you read that right. Believe it or not, you could wear t-shirts with suits and still be sartorially acceptable. You just have to be tasteful about choosing the tee and respectful about where you wear the look. Office outfit, this most certainly isn't.
Starting with any dark suit, throw on a regular white tee instead of an immaculate shirt to get that laid back vibe started. Any old presentable tee will do, but a v-neck does better than a round neck, provided that the neckline doesn't dip too low. If your clavicles are visible, you know it's too low. It goes without saying that you should also skip wearing the necktie and match the whole outfit with a pair of casual footwear like sneakers.
Graphic tees are even less formal, and should be worn only in the most casual of events, as in dropping by a friend's house for some coffee. Keep the design as abstract as you can; even a suit can't add too many style points to some infantile print of Elmo.
Hats
You should know by now that accessories can go a long way in men's fashion, and that a simple addition to your accoutrements can do much to your outfit. Much like a necktie, wearing (and not wearing) a hat can make a huge style statement to the people you meet.
A fedora or trilby with a narrow brim can add some rakishness to your look and a level of interest that few other accessories can create. Whether you go solid, with a subtle pattern like pinstripes or a bolder print like houndstooth, a slightly angled brimmed hat gives you an air of a Bohemian who knows his way around Savile Row.
More casual days could do with something less structured like a newsboy cap to literally top off your look. It's not exactly a style that's appropriate for the workplace, but it's worth trying if you feel that your existing outfit is too boring, or if it's too cold outside.
Wearing a suit involves more than just the shirt and necktie you pair with the jacket and the pants. By adding or subbing in other items - some of them you likely haven't tried ever before - you could end up with a completely new look from the exact same suit.
