Men's Style Conundrums: Graphic Tees
Non-plain t-shirts are an age-old fashion minefield for many men
. Solid crew neck and plain wifebeater shirts are known as pieces that you can wear with anything, but add print to the equation and you'll be in a completely different ball game. Some would say that no man over the age of 20 should be seen in a graphic tee, while others claim that it's a valid way to exhibit a rebellious streak. Which one better follows the edicts of modern style?
The Graphic Crowd
It's true what the men's fashion pundits say about graphic tees being largely restricted to the younger generation. That's why you usually see those styles of tops on 20-something musicians and the kids who follow them. But you don't necessarily have to be in the rock and roll crowd - or even the music scene, for that matter - to carry a graphic tee.
On the other side of the coin, it's also not so hot for men about to face their midlife crises to be wearing Metallica t-shirts and the like. There's definitely an age limit to this kind of fashion, and you've gone over that threshold once you hit your thirties. You can, however, rock graphics until well into your late twenties. Why should teenagers have all the fun?
There are two things you should know about graphic tees. First is that they're nowhere near formal. Unless you plan to spend the evening at home or with friends who share an interest in your graphic tee, wearing it might not be a good idea. Second, don't expect to be treated like a full-on adult, especially since you're not dressed as one anyway. Graphic tees, as the rest of fashion so often does, tends to influence your image to other people.
Going Graphic
Should your circumstances be appropriate for wearing graphic tees - that is, you're fairly young and you're going someplace that doesn't require any degree of formal fashion - actually making the style look good isn't so hard. It's mostly about keeping in mind what graphic tees are all about and wearing pieces that go with that kind of aesthetic.
Denims are the most versatile style pieces that you could throw on with a graphic tee, especially if the graphic is text or some character, as in from shows or video games. The simplicity and ubiquity of the denim keeps the focus on your shirt. If you want to dress your look up just a wee bit, though, try adding a jacket or a sport coat. This works pretty well for shirts whose graphic is centered smack in the middle of the trunk.
Other graphics - geometric, color blocked and abstract ones in particular - can be given an extra dose of eclectic style by pairing them up with other accessories. Adding a fedora or a necktie to an abstract or geometric graphic shirt gives a cheeky touch an otherwise traditional combination of shirt and tie. Take note, though, that the look only works for casual events like parties, even when you've got a necktie or a hat in there.
