Menopause Weight Gain Secrets Revealed
What does weight gain have to do with menopause
? That's one symptom that most women don't expect, but is actually fairly common. Of course whether you are going through menopause or not, after the age of 40 many women (and men) gain weight, right? Here are the many reasons why weight gain could be the result of another symptom of menopause and what you can do about it.
The usual suspects in this turn of events of course are the decrease in hormones, namely estrogen and progesterone, which happens on a gradual basis once menopause has begun. This can lead to a decrease in the basal metabolism, leading to a gradual weight gain in women. For the most part, at this time in a woman's life the weight starts to accumulate around the waist line rather than the lower body, but can also be found there as well. If a woman hasn't been keeping active the weight gain can be much more noticeable, and when combined with lack of sleep, headaches, irritability and moodiness, being active is probably the last thing on a woman's mind. So what can be done?
If you are one of the lucky women that is otherwise healthy and not too afraid of a little exercise, now is certainly the time to break out those sneakers, rollerblades, tennis rackets, bowling ball, or whatever else will keep you active and make it a habit again. If you don't particularly like exercise, there are other ways to stay active dancing is always good, or even just going for a walk around the neighborhood every evening (or at 3-5 times a week). Anything to get the blood pumping will suffice, really. If it has been awhile since you had any exercise at all, it's a good idea to check with your doctor and make sure there aren't any reasons why you can't take up a new hobby to lose weight. Better safe than sorry, right?
And while we're talking about health, you may also wish to look into herbal remedies to help balance out the hormonal imbalance that is the root of this weight gain. Perhaps some black cohosh, dong quai, ginseng, or other herbal tonic that will help to balance your hormones again. These herbs also are known to help boost energy, which is the one thing that will help in the quest for losing weight. Of course if your eating habits are like those of a teenager, then you may need to start thinking about a healthier diet as well. Raw fruits and vegetables, soy products and plenty of water (rather than sodas or sugary colas) are great to help get your energy back again.
Another course of action may be to try a multi-vitamin and multi-mineral, since it is well known that a lack of certain critical vitamins can lead to a sluggish metabolism. And if you are going to exercise, by all means get your 1500 mg. of calcium every day to help keep those bones strong. Take this time in your life to start something new, a wholesome lifestyle change that will lead you to a healthy new you!
