Losing Weight - How Many Pounds Per Week is Reasonable
?
As I surf the web I keep seeing people telling the world that "I'm going to lose 10 pounds this week" or something similar and I find it strange as 10 pounds is a lot of weight to lose on just 7 days. I also visit the forums and there I keep seeing people ask what is normal to lose in a week or two. So I'm guessing a lot of people don't know how many pounds it's reasonable to lose in one week. Well I know the answer and I am going to share it with you. But I have to warn you as you might not like the answer.
Losing weight is not something that should be done fast. It is actually possible to lose 10 pounds in a week but most likely it will be 80-90% muscle loss, which means you are worse off than when you started. You see, all weight is not equal. Muscle weighs more than fat and you do not want to lose that. Burning fat is a delicate process that should be done evenly over time. It's reasonable to lose approx. 1 pound pr. week. If you are losing more than that then you are doing better than average.
Muscle mass burns fat, so the more you have of it the better. If you are losing weight by losing muscle mass then you are making it even more difficult for your body to burn fat. That's why you should not try and not expect to lose 5 pounds or more pr. week.
Stay focused on your long term goal, that's the only thing that matter, getting there eventually. Make sure to watch your weight on a regular basis. I know that some people say you should not weigh in more than once a week. I personally disagree. I weigh in every morning and have done so for over 2 years. It's just important to weigh in at the same time. I weigh in after my morning bathroom routine. I just keep in mind that the weigh can fluctuate by a pound or two. I also track my weight loss process. I used to do it with pen and paper but no I use one of the free online programs to track my weight and sometimes what I eat.
Lose 1 pound a week and you are on the right track.
