Ladybug larvae, otherwise known as baby ladybugs, or Coccinellidae, meaning little red sphere in English, perfectly describing these little creatures. They are however most commonly known to people as being ladybugs, lady beetles, or ladybirds. For centuries, ladybugs have been an extremely useful aid to farmers, who have had trouble combating other insects which were destroying their crops. Small groups of ladybugs are released into the garden to help control pests.
A ladybug will go through the same stages as what would be seen in the life cycle of a butterfly. The larvae stage is the second stage in the cycle, and being the first stage after they have hatched. Ladybug eggs are laid on the underside of leaves. They are cleverly protected and usually lay undetected by likely predators such as flies. Being on the underside of the leaves, the eggs are usually shielded from the weather, which could was them away.
Once the eggs hatch, what is known as larvae emerge. They will immediately be on the hunt for food and therefore the mother will usually choose an appropriate leaf close by to prey. At this stage, they will eat tiny insects such as mites and will need to eat plenty in order to grow effectively. Larvae once hatched will look like minute alligators but within days, they will have grown enough so they can shed their skin and will continue to do this whilst they grow. The skin they leave behind can be found on the leaves if you have a look carefully.
Ladybug larvae tend to be black with yellow or orange marks on its sides or back. It is flat and long in shape, and if observed closely enough, have a black line down its back, resembling its spine. These ladybug larvae are hugely beneficial to any gardener or farmer since they eat pests such as mites which will destroy crops, plants and flowers.
This stage will tend to last approximately 21 days and will grow to around a quarter of an inch in size before they move on the next stage in becoming a fully developed ladybug. Most ladybugs will go into hibernation during the winter months and therefore can be seen most from Spring, when the plants and flowers start to bloom, giving them more food to find.
Furthermore they tend to be attracted to pollen to eat and therefore can be found most around certain types of plants, such as mustard plants, coriander and the wild carrot family. However, since most ladybugs are allergic to insecticides which are commonly used in gardens and farms and so not as many ladybugs are surviving as they have done in the past. This is the opposite situation to what was seen in the Summer of 1976 when the UK experience very hot weather climate and saw hundreds and thousands more ladybugs.
Ladybugs have been and still are a favourite insect amongst children, with any cultures considering them to be lucky. They also have a religious connection, with Christians associating them with the Virgin Mary.
