THE SWING:

The swing is the one of the foundation moves of kettlebell technique upon which many more moves are built. The kettlebell is held in two hands and swung out to eye level then back between the legs in a pendulum motion. The swing is definitely one of the best fat burning exercises on the planet! Not only that, the swing improves dynamic flexibility and boosts core stability like no other.

The kettlebell swing brings nearly every muscle in the body into action with particular emphasis being placed on the muscles in the legs (and the butt!). It also hits all the muscles in the waist, back shoulders and arms so you can see why it's so effective! With such a large amount of muscle being called into action the calorific expenditure is huge even more so than its close rivals, the deadlift and the squat. The swing tightens all the muscles around the waist line too. The next day many of my clients can't work out why their abs and obliques are sore when we have done no traditional specific abdominal work. The reason why the swing works the mid-section so effectively is that during the downward phase of the motion, as the kettlebell passes between the legs, the core must be kept tight to prevent torso rotation (this is especially true of the one-handed swing). This is also the reason the swing develops real world dynamic core stability far more effectively than hours in a static plank pose!

But it is the way the swing is used in a program that is so important. Like most kettlebell moves the real fat-burning benefit comes from not using reps, as used in a standard weight training program, but timed periods. Kettlebell training blurs the line between cardiovascular training and resistance training so that both are hit within the same workout! When the highly dynamic swing is coupled with either short rest periods or recuperative exercises in short drills, not only is the calorific expenditure pushed through the roof, but the metabolic rise is incredible. Your muscles continue to burn away at your energy stores namely fat long after the exercise has stopped! Your heart and lungs will also be conditioned by the kettlebell swing like no other exercise, leading to excellent circulatory health. In fact I have used the swing coupled with other lifts to maintain cardiovascular strength in many injured runners. When returning to running they often found their cardiovascular health was the same, if not better, than it was before!
