Whether you are 10 lbs overweight or 30, it can be intimidating to get into that gym and go at it! I have put together some tips you can use in your current lifestyle to help you prepare to lose those pounds. For the first couple of weeks, the focus should be on moving as much as possible and using your bodyweight for resistance. There really is no need to jump into a heavy set of any exercise.
Here are some tips for both nutrition and workouts that will give you the jump start you need to reach that goal!
1) Drink Lots of Water! You have heard "it's water weight" Yes, by drinking water when you currently do not you may lose a few pounds just from increasing your water intake. What your body does is hold onto the water it does have, if you do not give it water regularly. This can cause retention of water weight and bloating. By drinking water throughout the day, your body knows it can release liquids because you will continue to replenish the supply.
2) Cut Out Refined Sugars: Even if you don't have a sweet tooth, refined sugars are EVERYWHERE and they can be the death of you! By cutting back on breads, baked goods, dairy with added sugars, candies, fruit juices, etc.. You can easily retrain your body to go for healthier foods. Foods that will help your body produce energy and have a great workout and see great results.
3) Use Your Bodyweight: You don't need dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls to have resistance in your workouts. Your body can act as a weight itself. Some great exercises you can incorporate into your workouts are bodyweight squats, push ups, lunges, situps, side planks, push ups with rotations, and knees to elbows. All can be done without any added weights and ALL have the resistance provided from bodyweight and gravity. Can be EXTREMELY effective for building strength in the beginning of a workout program and save you from injury from added weight.
4) Switch Up Your Workouts: So You may not LOVE the gym like I do, but, there are plenty of places you can workout. Workout at home, workout at the park especially when it is getting warmer, get friends together for a game of volleyball or basketball, or even take the dog for a run. All can be excellent workouts and it will keep you away from boredom and plateauing.
5) Don't Be Intimidated! I know walking into a gym where everyone looks like they know what they are doing, can be intimidating. All I can tell you is, 80% of the people there probably have no idea what they are doing. The gym is the perfect place to see people act like they know it all. Bring some great music and get in your groove. Don't let the muscle guys lifting those 100lb dumbbells scare you. Don't let the woman doing cardio for 3 hours deter you. You go in and do your thing! Make it happen!
