Is Liposuction A Weight Loss Solution?
In our day and age, it's pretty common for people to carry a little extra fat
. An age of desk jobs, fast food meals and relaxing in fromt of the TV can hardly expect much else. Just as common as having a bit of an extra tummy bulge, however, is feeling upset and unhappy about the extra weight.
A growing number of Americans are overweight and unhappy about it. There seems to be a growing divide between the way the average American looks and the way that he or she wants to. The popularity of fad diets, weight-loss pills and the perennial popularity of diet and exercise books all bear witness to the American desire to be thinner, healthier and sexier.
This trend also explains to some degree the appeal and popularity of liposuction (also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy). Lipoplasty is a surgical technique which removes fat from specific target areas of a patient's body. It does this by suctioning the fat out through a tiny hollow needle called a cannula. The cannula is inserted through small incisions in the patient's skin and moved through the fatty tissue to remove the fat. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia.
The surgery is hugely popular in America. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo suction lipectomy. The surgery enjoys a unique level of popularity among cosmetic surgeries. For twelve out of the last thirteen years, lipoplasty has been the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States.
Before you ditch your diet and gym membership and go get under the knife, there are some things you should know, though. Although it's touted as a wonder cure by some people, the surgery has limits to the amount of weight that it can help to remove. Ironically, the surgery works best on people who are fairly close to their target weight. People who are more than twenty-five or thirty pounds overweight may find that their surgery is unsuccessful.
The surgery is ideal at removing relatively small, isolated pockets of fat from specific body areas. It is not well suited to whole body, extensive weight loss.
Liposuction can similarly not be expected to replace healthy habits such as eating a sensible, balanced diet or getting regular exercise. Although the surgery may make you look better, it will not provide you with the health benefits of living a wellness-oriented lifestyle. The surgery works best when it is treated as just one part of an overall effort to improve one's appearance.
