Millions upon millions of people spend multiple hours every week, sometimes every day, researching and calculating the amount of calories that are contained in every item of food of every meal they consume each and every day of the week. Sharing the amount of calories contained in various foods has become a very popular way to advertise and more and more restaurants are providing their customers with menus that include the amount of calories in each menu item. Calorie counting has become an enormous trend and for many people counting calories is more than just a diet solution. It is a lifestyle.

The question is, is calorie counting a valid and viable diet solution that will help the millions upon millions of people doing it lose weight? The answer in most cases is no. Eating fewer calories does not mean fat will be burned. In fact, quite the opposite is true. A very common effect of calorie counting is the body entering starvation mode as a result of not getting enough nutrients. When your body goes into starvation mode it compensates by holding onto stored fats much longer and also by doing less breaking down of the foods we do eat so it can store those foods as fats as well. Starvation mode is not just triggered by the body as a last-ditch effort to stage off starvation and extreme malnutrition. Starvation mode is triggered long before starvation and as stated is very commonly triggered simply by cutting down on the amount of calories you eat.

The amount of calories you burn when exercising is not reflective of the amount of weight you will lose because with regards to weight loss the amount of calories burned isn't nearly as significant as the amount of fat calories burned. Similarly, the amount of calories we eat or don't eat is seldom reflective of the amount of weight we will or will not gain. There are many foods that are high in calories that the body not only breaks down very easily, but then is able to use to burn fat. Likewise, there are TONS of low calorie foods (particularly processed "low fat" foods) that the body isn't able to break down and therefore is stored as fat.

A calorie counting diet solution almost always leads to smaller portions of food. Whats worse is many of the diet solution programs out there suggest eating fake, imitation and highly processed foods simply because they are "low in calories". We would be much better served by our diet solution if we would stop focusing on the calories and shift that focus to eating foods that not only assist in but also increase the fat burning metabolic process in our bodies. Eating larger portions of foods that are broken down easily and then actually help our bodies burn fat, regardless of the amount of calories contained in the portions, is much better for our bodies than eating small portions of so called "low fat" and "low calorie" processed diet foods that our bodies are unable to break down so then are stored as fat anyway.

Don't go eating high calorie foods simply because they are high in calories. That is not the point of this article. DO stop focusing so much on the calories though. Low calorie foods that hinder the fat burning metabolic process in your body is hardly a diet solution and is clearly worse for you than high calorie foods that enhance and assist in the burning of fat. The trick is finding which foods those are and specifically which foods are best for your particular metabolism and then eating a lot of those foods.
