Meal Replacement Diets - What Are They And Are They Right For You?
Ever wondered about trying a meal replacement diet
? There are several types of these weight loss plans on the market, with mixed results and mixed reviews.
What are they really?
Mainly a meal replacement diet plan consists of you eating meal 'replacements' like shakes, bars or even cookies throughout the day, followed by a 'sensible' meal at night (think salad or veggies and lean protein).
Usually you eat several meal substitutes per day - up to 7 or 8 every day. This helps you not to feel deprived.
Plus many of these meals are higher in protein which helps to keep your metabolism high and keep you feeling fuller longer.
Many people - including several famous stars - have lost weight on these types of diets. But there are some serious drawbacks to these plans as well. Here is an overview of the benefits and drawbacks of these plans:
Benefits:
- You can lose weight very fast on these plans. In fact some people lose up to 7 pounds a week on these plans. Because you're eating several times a day your metabolism stays high.
However be aware that these diets can range from 800-1200 calories a day. Try to go with at least 1200 calories a day as anything lower than that can be dangerous.
- These diets are great for busy people as most meals are portable and easy to take with you. You don't have to spend hours in the kitchen preparing meals. You just prepare your meal by adding water or microwaving for a few minutes and you are ready to go.
- A few of these diets (not all) are actually recommended by physicians to their patients with over 30 pounds to lose. So if you have a lot of weight to lose - especially if your extra weight is posing health problems - these diets might help you lose weight very fast.
- You eat several times a day on these diets so you don't feel hungry
- Many meals are higher in protein so again, you don't get as hungry as with standard diets
Drawbacks:
- Some of these diets can be very unhealthy and unbalanced - make sure you choose a meal replacement diet that is recommended by physicians and always consult your doctor before trying any new diet
- While you can lose weight very fast on these diets, you can't stay on them forever. They are at best a temporary fix. You should have some plan to transition to a healthier lifestyle where you can eat balanced meals of 'real' food once you've lost the weight you want.
Recommendations:
While there are definitely benefits to trying a meal replacement diet plan, you should keep a few things in mind. Not all of these diets are created equal and some can be dangerous - while others offer balanced, doctor-approved safe weight loss.
Look for plans that are doctor-recommend and that give you not just shakes - but bars and other meals like chilis, soups, oatmeals and other snacks. This will give you some much-needed variety and help you stick to the plan.
As always, consult your doctor before starting any weight loss plan just to be safe.
