Infant Sleep Patterns vs. Baby Sleep patterns
The parent who tries to get their baby to sleep at night
, often get very little sleep themselves. For the moms and dads, many sleepless nights have been spent trying to get their babies to fall into a sleeping pattern so they can get some rest. Reality sets in when you can't get any rest, and you realize that baby sleep training is the only way you are going to solve it is by teaching baby how to sleep on their own. Baby sleep patterns are different from infant sleep patterns, and can be approached in many different ways. Are you losing a lot of sleep wondering how to train your baby to sleep alone? Are you looking for some relief at night? Then the following recommended methods should be of some help to you.
Intervention techniques.
When you first arrive home from the hospital with your new infant you may notice that the baby sleeps most of the time. Infant behavior usually follows a predictable pattern of feeding and sleeping. When babies get older however, they tend to stay awake for longer periods of time, and sometimes they will keep you awake for long periods of time until you can train them to sleep regularly on their own. When you have had enough of staying awake all night, you'll want to help your baby transition into sleeping regularly by themselves with intervention techniques. The following methods will all work, but the one that you choose will be a matter of personal preference.
Get baby used to you leaving.
The Ferber method teaches the parent to wait until the baby begin to show signs of fatigue, and then put them to bed and leave them alone in the room to go to sleep on their own. The parent does not return to the room for five minutes, even if the baby cries. When the parent leaves the room again they will wait ten minutes before returning. The process is repeated adding more time between returns, until the baby has fallen to sleep. The following night, parents will want to begin the cycle but wait for longer periods of time between consoling and leaving the room, until the baby learns how to sleep alone.
Slowly leave the room.
A different method called the gradual parent removal method lets the parent stay in the room when baby is put in the crib for the night. The parent will sit next to the crib fro two nights waiting for baby to fall asleep. The third and forth night are spent a little farther away from the baby. The parent will repeat the process until they are no longer in the room.
Let them cry themselves to sleep.
The cry out method means that you just let them cry themselves to sleep. This can test a parent's will to resist consoling the baby for long periods of time.
Enjoy the
infant sleep patterns while they last, before long you will be losing some sleep. The
baby sleep training methods described in this article should put your problems to rest in no time. Parents can rest assured that when the
baby sleep patterns become regular, they will be able to rest themselves.
