The Austin Healy sports car is named after Donald Mitchell Healey
, a famed British rally-car driver and automobile engineer. He eventually became a speed record holder, and it is for this reason that his cars are so famous. Not only did he drive his super-fast race cars, he also built the cars himself.
Donald Healy volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps where he earned his wings. When he returned home to study engineering and motorcars, he decided to open a garage. His real passion was building motorcars for rally competitions.
He began to build his own cars in 1946, but it was not until 1952 that he began to produce various models of the Austin Healeys for public sale. The fine production cars were mass produced for the general public, and they became widely popular for their exquisite build, unmatched speed, and amazing handling. The cars were also popular because many of them were convertibles, which made them super stylish. Over 200,000 were produced, and many of them were exported to Australia and America.
One of the most beautiful models in the history of Austin Healey cars is the 100 BN1 and 100 BN2. These cars were known as the beautiful big roadsters, and these cars were produced with obvious sports-car characteristics. Healey himself demanded that they should be strong, reliable and constructed from proven, readily-available materials. These cars were easy to maintain, had a stylish appearance, and were capable of 100 mph. The 100 BN1 was truly a sports car that all men could afford. Only about 15,000 were produced. These cars were built with four-cylinder engines.
The next popular model was the 100/6 BN4 and 100/6 BN6. After a few years, Austin Healey cars were redesigned with bigger engines to make them faster and more competitive. These new model of Austin Healeys came equipped with 2.6 litre six-cylinder engines. The wheel base was wider, and the car included four seats. Once again, only about 15,000 were produced.
The cars are so widely popular throughout Australia that numerous Austin Healey car clubs exist for those who are entertained by the classic car. Many of these clubs attract enthusiasts from around Australia to celebrate the Austin Healey. Here is a list of such clubs:
Austin Healey Owners' Club (NSW) Inc. is a club that has been an organised since 1969. It is dedicated to pursuing happiness and joy through the love of owning an Austin Healey sports car.
The Sprite Car Club of Australia Inc. was established 1960 to cater to the interests of owners, drivers, and fans of Austin Healey Sprites and MG Midgets in Australia. They are the oldest Sprite car club in the world.
Austin Healey Sprite Drivers' Club Inc. is another club dedicated to Healey's cars. Formed by a group of enthusiastic Spridget owners, the club's activities are geared towards driving the cars. It is not a social club.
The Sprite Car Club of Queensland offers enthusiasts from around Queensland monthly meetings, competition events, and social drives.
