Wedding planners are most useful for their knowledge of the industry their knowledge of what is reasonable and normal particularly when vendors give conflicting advice. Wedding planners can also act as the 'point person' in negotiations with vendors and sometimes, if they've been in the business for a while, tell you which vendors to avoid.
Wedding planners often offer different 'services':
Full service event planners will work with the couple, in a detailed way, to ensure that every aspect of their wedding is planned. Some full service event planners will also act as designers, to give the wedding the look' that the couple want.
'Month of' or 'day of' planners These planners are normally employed for the day. Most of the planning will have already been done when they are approached, but the couple are keen to not have to deal with things on the day.
Wedding Planners who work for free These make money from the Vendors themselves, who will give them a percentage from the clients they refer.
