Wedding Gown Fabrics
It's the material that contributes most to the shape and feel of a wedding gown
. A whole vocabulary of adjectives is based on the type of fabric. Think about it: sheen and smooth, rigid and textured, lightweight and smooth, and more. The fabric is what makes or breaks a dress. It's also the main factor when the designer determines how much you'll be paying.
Needless to say, if the designer starts off with an expensive textile, chances are the dress will be pricey as well. Silk, the most luxurious, will be much pricier than it's synthetic counterpart. If you're on a tight budget, it'll probably be better to shop for dresses made from synthetic materials. But honestly, why opt for silk if that polyester satin dress looks and feels just as nice? The only thing to be cautious about is its breathability, since natural materials tend to breathe better. Critical to remember if you're having a destination wedding in the Caribbean! Dyes do take to silk more easily, as well. On the other hand, synthetic materials resist wrinkling better.
You don't want your wedding dress to be all wrinkled when you put it on, nor do you want it to wrinkle too much while you're wearing it. Do the wrinkle test: squeeze some of the gown's fabric in your fist and hold for a few seconds. Release then examine the fabric. How does the fabric look? Is it barely noticeable? Smooth with few wrinkles is best.
Fabrics differ in quality depending on the manufacturer that produced it. The satin used by one manufacturer may vary considerably when compared to the satin of the same makeup that another manufacturer uses.
Indications of better fabric: looks nicer, feels softer and drapes better.
