How to Choose Prescription Or Over the Counter Weight Loss Pills
How to Choose Prescription Or Over the Counter Weight Loss Pills
There are almost always more questions for those of us who want to and need to lose weight than answers. Which supplements will give me the fastest results? The best weight loss pills are which ones? For the millions of people who need to lose weight these are two of the most important questions they ask. There would not be a billion plus dollar industry related to losing weight and getting fit if there were easy answers. What would be the best answer to these questions? The supplements which produce the best results for me. That may seem like too easy of an answer. However, this is the answer we are all looking to find.
Medications can cause dissimilar reactions for different people because we're not all alike. The DNA makeup of our bodies, although similar in basic structure, can be vastly different. The best weight loss pills that work for you may not necessarily work for me because of these differences. A good example of this would be the effects of caffeine on siblings. Take me and my brother, for instance, caffeine can affect him in such a way that it assists him in staying awake for long periods of time, and helping him focus on projects that he's working on. However, it has little to no effect on me, and we are very genetically similar. This is an example of why it is more important to ask "What are the most effective weight loss pills for me?" than to ask "What are the best weight loss pills available?".
There are two categories with which these supplements are generally classified, "over the counter" and "prescription". Over the counter supplements are not as closely regulated as prescription drugs are regulated. Also, prescription pills have ingredients that require medical supervision for legal use. Just because one category is used under a doctor's supervision, does not mean that it is necessarily safe. Sometimes the opposite has been true. It is also true that, over the counter supplements can be dangerous. This was the case a few years ago when ephedra based over the counter products were banned by the FDA. Prior to this, the ephedra caffeine stack (pills with both ephedra and caffeine ingredients) was a staple in the body building world. It was considered safe. It wasn't until the ephedra caffeine stack became a mainstream over the counter supplement that the side effects for women became clear. There are risks to either over the counter pills for prescription drugs for losing weight.
It may be even more frightening to use over the counter pills lose weight because there really isn't any mandatory supervision. All the best weight loss pills available today (this is also the law for all herbal supplements) are to be reviewed by the FDA for safety and truth in advertising (do they do what the manufacturer claims their product does). Unfortunately, the FDA does not have enough staff to keep up with all of the new health supplements on the market today. Because of this, it may be years before they are able to analyze a supplement for possible side effects. If you read the small print on many of these diet supplements you will see a statement something similar to "these claims have not been evaluated by the FDA". You may even see this warning on some of the bottles of pills you have in your cabinets. It is very important to realize this when making a choice between using supplements from one category or the other.
A quick thought:
Many times we are lulled into a sense of safety because these supplements, as well as, other health supplements are labeled "natural". This does not necessarily mean they are safe. For instance, a naturally occurring element that would be considered "natural" is a toxic poison known as arsenic. Arsenic is not safe to ingest even if it is natural.
There can be very good results with either prescription weight loss pills or over the counter weight loss pills. However, we should be aware of the risks involved when using them. At least you have medical supervision available to monitor your progress when using those in the prescription category. This may make it safer to use supplements in the prescription category as you'll be mitigating some of the risk involved.
