To have the least amount of health risks that can come with being overweight, your BMI should be somewhere in the healthy range. That healthy range is having a BMI somewhere between 18.5 and 24.9. A BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered to be overweight and having a BMI of 30 or higher is considered to be obese. On the opposite end, having a BMI of less than 18.5 is considered to be underweight.
Now that you know your BMI, you will have a general idea of where you are health wise. The higher your number, the more at risk you are for health problems. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks and premature death are among the common risk factors.
The BMI scale is not always a 100% accurate account of precisely where your weight needs to be. The frame of your body needs to be taken into account somewhat. If you have big bones, your body is able to handle a little extra weight and still be healthy. Conversely, if you have a smaller frame, you can do without some weight and still be healthy.
