How Remote Console Management Can Grow Your Business

How Remote Console Management Can Grow Your Business

Since the online business boom of the late '90s

, customer expectations for online retailers have grown significantly. One of the benefits many people cite to online shopping is that it can be done any time of day, at any point with just a few keystrokes. However, from an administrator's point of view, this kind of accessibility is the result of long hours of labor maintaining servers, connections, and hardware that keep both inter-office and external communications flowing, all without a centralized location to perform their duties. This is where console management becomes a vital part of improving a system administrators workflow.

Since servers and connections need to be maintained constantly, placing the burden of this job on one person is nearly impossible with today's infrastructure. However, being able to remotely manage several aspects of the job is a definite plus for any network administrator. Console management can also be beneficial in creating uniform consoles for system administrators to control all aspects of their job instead of having to access various portions from different command lines or areas of the operating system.

One particular Console Management System that is easy to set up is Microsoft Management Console. MCM is a flexible system that can create consoles on the fly for controlling just about every aspect of a server's operations. Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server is required for the creation and management of consoles using this system.

Because system tasks can be grouped together under one console, multiple consoles can be created for different levels of access. Sever administrators can create full featured consoles for utilization outside of the office via remote access, or they can create a console with basic principles such as FTP access to a server for anyone within the office.

The ability to create such consoles on the fly for their intended purpose makes MCM a great console management solution, but it is not the only available on the market. For businesses that utilize a Linux based hosting system, there are several open source alternatives to creating consoles for multiple users. A popular solution is CronMan, which functions very similar to MCM but inside the Linux environment, is using simple command line input to generate consoles for multi-level access as it is needed.

Depending on the Linux distribution that is used for server needs, it may already contain a decent console management tool that allows for creation of multi-user consoles. Fedora and CentOS are both options that have robust management tools to make network administration done across multiple sessions as painless as possible for all users involved.

The type of console management system you use for your network administration should be left solely up to your network administrators. Administration is not a set in stone duty and everyone works better under their own constraints.
