How Long Has Liposuction Been An Acceptable Weight-loss Procedure?

Liposuction became a successful source for unwanted fat removal in 1974

. Dr. Giorgio Fischer, a gynecologist from Italy, was the first to invent the original form of the fat removing surgery. Four years later in 1978 two French physicians Illouz and Fournier took the liposuction developments to new levels. By 1980, liposuction had become a popular procedure in the United States.

However, liposuction was also beginning to confront negative reactions to the procedures due to patients experiencing excessive bleeding and unattractive curves of the skin after surgery. Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein, was the first to discover an alternative technique called the tumescent technique in 1985. This discovery provided a much more desirable way of performing the surgery and achieving excellent outcomes.

For the first ten years of performance general anesthesia was an unconditional requirement. The standard tool called the cannula during the 1980's was huge; its diameter was 6 to 10 mm. During this time epidural regional anesthesia, heavy IV sedation supplemented with small volumes of local anesthesia were all used to remove the fat from the body. These techniques continually produced excessive bleeding, prolonged recovery time, and disfiguration of the skin.

The tumescent technique provided for the patients to have the liposuction performed with a local anesthetic as opposed to a general anesthetic. The local anesthetic was made of a combination of lidocaine and epinephrine. The correct dosage for these drugs was the most challenging part of the discovery. A much smaller cannula, known as the michrocannula, which is the tool used to loosen and extract the fat from the body was also invented. The michrocannula had a diameter of about 2mm.

The word tumescent means to engorge or to fill up with liquid, therefore, for liposuction purposes large volumes of highly diluted solutions create a local anesthesia which is injected into subcutaneous fat. This technique became so popular and ground braking because it practically eliminated the need for general anesthesia, the problem of excessive blood loss, and less disfiguration of the skin.

Liposuction has been a working surgical procedure for about 36 years and many new techniques continue to be invented. Since the discovery of the tumescent technique in 1985 surgeons have continued to polish and refine its effectiveness. New discoveries have been added to its safety, precision, creating desirable results and recovery time. More and more surgeons have studied a variety of techniques that provide patients with options based on their needs and desires.
