Hosting a friends or family members baby shower can be a great deal of fun but it can also require a great deal of work

Make no mistakes you want the baby shower to be an exciting and memorable day for the new mother-to-be and therefor should be your focus throughout the planning process.
One way to keep the focus on the new mother is to ensure that the guest list is made up of a compatible mix of friends and family. For example, as the sister of the mother-to-be, you might invite social friends and family members who you know are all acquainted with each other. You might want to avoid including the people that your sister works with, knowing that nobody else on the guest list will know them. It may be that the co-workers will hold a baby shower of their own.
Once you have decided on the guest list, the date of the party and the location, you can get the baby shower invitations in the mail. As busy as people are these days, it is important to get the invitations out to people at least a few weeks prior to the baby shower. If it appears that this may not be possible, you should alert all of the guests to save the date, and then follow that notice with the actual baby shower invitations as soon as possible.
Now that all of the logistics of where have been established, you can now begin the serious planning for how you want the day to flow. While it is traditional to have food of some sort at a baby shower, and gifts for baby and the new mother, almost anything else you want to do is up to you. Sometimes there are games that are played at a shower. Part of your planning may be determined by whether this is the first child for this mother. Some activities are more appropriate the first time around than they would be if this is her third child. As host, you know the personalities of the mother-to-be, as well as the guests, and can determine what activities are appropriate for the occasion.
